Seasoned Vineyard visitors, Vineyard summer home owners or those that are coming to vacation in a Martha’s Vineyard vacation rental, advance car ferry reservations are a very good idea when you’re trying to get across with your car during the peak summer weeks. It can seem like a daunting task, but if you follow what is written below it will truly help simplify it!

This year, advance car ferry reservations are required for allFridays through Mondays from June 22 to September 3, 2012 as well as for MemorialDay weekend ( May 25 – 29) and Columbus Day weekend (October 5 – 8). While notrequired, weekend reservations for the rest of June andSeptember aren’t a bad idea. The Steamship Authority has a handy document withall its ferryreservation policies, rates and schedules.
At 8 a.m. January 17^th - Advancecar reservations for this summer go on sale onlineat the SteamshipAuthority Website It can often be a “race to the finish” so do nothesitate to act early.
You will need a profile number to be able to book online with the SteamshipAuthority. If you don’t have one already, set that up in advance, it’s a big time-saver.
On January 24^th(a week later thanonline) - Reservations by phone will be taken. Besure to get the name of the ticket agent you speak to.
HINT: If you can’t get your first choice ofdate and/or time, DO buy a ticket and put your name on the waiting list, mosttravelers have learned they end up doing ok going that route.

Hiking is fun for all! Be sure to pick up a map of the Land Bank and Trustee of Reservation properties. Over one-third of the Island is held in preservation and the trails go through cool woodlands, breezy meadows and along the scenic shoreline. Biking and jogging trails are all over the Island and our gentle, rolling terrain makes this kind of touring a very easy and wonderful individual or group activity.
For those that are water oriented, many charter boats offer half-day or daylong fishing trips and there’s also no shortage on day cruises. Motorboat, sailboat, jet ski, and kayak rentals are found mainly in the three major villages. Island Water Sports and Wind’s Up are good places to check with about rentals, and Mad Max is a popular Catamaran tour out of Edgartown. A cocktail sail at sunset on Magic Carpet is not to be missed.

Favorite Martha's Vineyard Beaches

Beaches are one of the popular attractions on Martha’s Vineyard. Some of our favorites:

State Beach – Great for little kids, small waves, very little undertow. The five mile stretch along Beach road between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs features usually calm water, sand bars, lots of free parking, and a snack bar/truck with yummy frozen lemonade. There are lifeguards on duty and nice picnic benches at the part of the beach called the "bend in the road" at the Edgartown end.
South Beach – Beautiful Beach at the end of Herring Creek Road or Katama Road. It features large waves, some undertow. Free Parking
Fuller Street Beach- Just at the very end of Fuller Street in Edgartown. This is a long stretch with mostly calm water. This beach tends to be less busy since there is little parking. Bike racks are available.
Long Beach – In West Tisbury , on the south shore. A nice beach with a small lake. Great for young and older kids. The lake has no waves and the beach great waves and you can access both from the same spot on the beach. Cost for entry.
Aquinnah (formerly called Gay Head – fabulous cliffs of red clay. A small part of the beach is "clothing optional", however other sections are clothed. Cost for parking
Menemsha – In Aquinnah. A small but nice beach in a quaint fishing village (this was actually one of the sights the movie JAWS was filmed). Also, since the beach faces west, a local ritual has visitors coming to view the sunset each evening…it’s one of the few sunsets you’ll see over water from an East Coast location. Many also come with picnics or stop by Chilmark General Store along the way for their famous pizza. Free but limited parking.

The good news is that the harbors did not freeze this winter (2010), though many of the salt ponds did, but the better news is that the water is warming once again and soon it will be teaming with reawakened sea life, beach goers and boats. One sure sign that summer is very near is the appearance in our harbors of the nautical snowbirds. What are they you ask?! They are what we call those that take their boats to warmer waters in the Fall and then sail them back up to their home berths in New England coastal towns in the Spring, using the Vineyard as one of their landfalls on their journey North. “How was Martha’s Vineyard discovered and “Who was Martha?”

The first Europeans that visited Martha's Vineyard were the Northmen, who landed about the year 1000, naming it Vineland. In some of their writings have been found descriptions that can be of no other place than Martha's Vineyard.
Another discoverer of this island was Verrazano, an Italian explorer, who first sighted the western extremity, formerly called Gay Head and now called Aquinnah, in 1524 and called it Claudia, in honor of the mother of Francis II of France. The next explorer and the one most often credited with the discovery as well as the first one to leave any account of the island, was Bartholomew Gosnold, of Falmouth, England. In 1602 he sailed for Virginia. Contrary winds drove him to the Azores; thence he sailed a little north of west, and struck out boldly across the Atlantic. He was the first Englishman to sail directly to the American coast, thereby saving nearly a thousand miles in distance and at least a week in sailing time. He landed on a cape which he named Cape Cod from the abundance of codfish found there. Then doubling the cape and sailing to the southward he landed on a small island about six miles southeast of Gay Head. He called this small island Martha's Vineyard. The next day he landed on the larger island. After exploring it and finding it so large, well wooded, and with such luxuriant grape vines, many beautiful lakes, and springs of the purest water, he transferred the name and called it Martha's Vineyard, in honor of his mother whose name was Martha. He found on Martha's Vineyard "an abundance of trees and vines of luxuriant growth." His expedition was not a failure because it showed Europe a shorter and more direct route to America and kept up the interest in the new country. The Mayflower followed this route eighteen years later.
About five years later, in 1607, Captain Martin Pring, with a more courageous company than Gosnold's, anchored in what is now Edgartown harbor on Whit Sunday and called it Whitsun Bay. He built a stockade on Chappaquiddick Bluffs which he called Mount Aldworth. Pring traded with the Indians, amused them with music, but enjoyed terrifying them with the sound of the cannon, and with two large mastiffs which he had on board his ship. He sailed away at the first sign of hostility with a cargo of the precious sassafras root.
By this time the Vineyard had also become known to the English by the Indian name of Capawock, and it seems to have been considered one of the most important places on the newly-discovered American coast. This was of course because of its geographical location, harbors and springs of purest water.
We can find in the old records at Edgartown where the first settlers had their grants of lands, for many of the deeds are written in the Indian as well as the English language. The following year, 1642, Governor Thomas Mayhew came to the Vineyard with other settlers. He brought domestic animals, tools, and many things which were needed to start a new colony. Among the families that were here in 1650 we find the names of Butler, Bland, Smith, Burchard, Daggett, Folger, Bayes, Trapp, Norton, Pease, and Vinson (aka Vincent). Many descendants of these original settling families* still reside on the Island!

At the western most point of Martha's Vineyard sits the town Aquinnah with its famous colored clay cliffs, now a National Landmark. The salty scents of New England linger in the air. Once called Gay Head the present day Wampanoag Native Americans changed its name to Aquinnah, meaning "High Land", in 1997. The tribe members and their descendants had lived on Martha's Vineyard for centuries before the white settlers arrived. The story of their arrival is unusual for its lack of bloodshed and for the community accord with the Wampanoag. In 1642, under the leadership of Thomas Mayhew Jr., laws were such that the Wampanoag's land could not be taken without consent and fair payment. The Wampanoag taught farming and whaling techniques to the settlers, and were in high demand as boatsteeres for whaling vessels.

The tribe and their descendants were recognized as a federally recognised tribe in 1987 and today they make up about one third of Aquinnah's 344 plus residents. The Wampanoag trust lands encompass 485 acres – 160 acres privately held and 325 acres common lands

One is struck by the splendor of high, mile long colored clay cliffs, towering above sandy, rocky beaches. Waves crash against the shore. Choose a clear, sunny day to fully appreciate the panorama from the top of Aquinnah Cliffs and or while strolling along the two public beaches: Moshup Beach to the southwest and Lobsterville Beach along the Sound side of town. From the sand, your eyes will be drawn first to the majestic cliffs, rising steeply to flaunt their colorful striations, and then to the beach-goers, in bathing and birthday suits, prancing in and out of the water and often wallowing —illegally — in the clay pits. One can also enjoy the biking and walking trails that wind through roads, beaches, and vegetation.

The Gay Head lighthouse: John Quincy Adams had a wooden lighthouse constructed at Gay Head and it opened in 1779. Refurbished, it stands to this day as a beacon to those at sea as they. The lighthouse is overseen by the Martha's Vineyard Museum, and is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from one hour before sunset to a half hour after sunset, from the summer solstice to the fall equinox. If you are fishing on or off-shore, it'll feel like the Old World, where countless fishermen, whalers, Wampanoag, have been before you.

In closing…While you may not sleep in Aquinnah, you'll want to visit this ancient jewel. While much of the rest of Martha's Vineyard, hums the tune of day and night life, Aquinnah awaits you with its low-key, low-profile, serene atmosphere.

Information of Importance: Martha's Vineyard Transit System buses serve Aquinnah and connect it to the Island's other towns and it may be the best way to go as parking is difficult at the cliffs and beach. Be prepared to drop guests and continue around the circle to the parking lot.

Chappaquiddick- Our island Jewel

Across the swift moving channel leading into the Edgartown Harbor lies the precious jewel of an island called Chappaquiddick (CHAP-ah-QUID-dick). On your way to Chappaquiddick you pass through the most historic and thickly settled town on Martha’s Vineyard and on to its least developed area. "Chappy," as it's lovingly called. This tiny island offers several beautiful beaches, nature reserves and a tranquil Japanese garden called Mytoi.

Since the recent break in the barrier beach on the southern end of Katama Bay the Chappy Ferry is the only way to reach the island by car or bicycle. The wait for a place for your car on the Chappy ferry can be lengthy in the summer, especially in the mornings heading to Chappy and in the late afternoon when all the beach goers are heading back to town. This is especially true on weekends.

In the summer, I'd suggest that you get your car (at least) on the ferry as early as possible in the morning and park it on the other side in the lot—passengers can cross later if necessary—and don't wait until late in the day to return to Edgartown, or you may have to wait an hour or more. If you are staying on Chappy, you will not usually be heading the same direction during the heaviest traffic times!

There is only one commercial business on the island. The Chappy Store has recently been upgraded and offers many staples, cold drinks, condiments, ice cream, newspapers and even fresh veggies from the famed Morning Glory Farm. For day trippers, it is always best to bring what you need for the day.

About three miles (5 km) across, with only one paved road, and currently no bike path, Chappaquiddick is can be difficult to travel by bicycle. The rest of the roads are single-lane sandy, dirt roads that really require mountain bike to plow through the sometimes deep sand.

People who live on Chappaquiddick place a high value on the isolation. Many people do not understand how valuable that is until they spend some time there. I have urged many a newcomer to stay on Chappy. Once you have experienced its grace, you will never turn back.

Spending every summer on Chappaquiddick turned me into a bit of a CLAM fanatic. MY childhood memories are filled with visions of our salt water pond, children, parents and grandparents all filling metal baskets with clams. I now choose to spend every day off, in my clam pond, up to my knees and elbows in water, searching for those sweet and salty treats.

Ask most children if they like clams and you will hear a resounding"NO!" followed by an extended tongue expression of "Yechhh!" I, however, started digging as soon as I could walk and have been eating clams ever since. The two most popular bivalves on Martha's Vineyard are Quahogs and Steamers. Quahogs have different names for the various sizes. Littlenecks are the smallest and most widely desired for eating raw on the half shell. Slightly larger, the Cherrystone fares well as clams casino and with BBQ sauce on the grill. Quahogs and Topnecks are the largest. Locally known as "stuffers" or "chowda" clams, they can be larger than a man's fist!

The various methods of digging are as unique as the people who do the digging. If you ask my Grandmother, Eleanor, she would tell you the best way is to dig quahogs is with your toes! I have vivid memories of Gramma in her bathing suit and wide brimmed straw hat, standing in the pond slowly pushing her toes through the soft sand. Quahogs lie close to the surface of the sand making them easy prey for Gramma. My favorite method is to rake my extended fingers through the sand while kneeling or sitting in the water. NOTE: Neither of these methods work well for the squeamish.

Commercial clammers and the fearful alike, tend to use rakes. I had a short handled rake with long tines placed one inch apart. This worked well but meant that you rake bent over. The older I get, the more my hamstrings protest with this method. Most of the rakes found these days have long wooden handles and a basket that catch even the smallest littlenecks. When using a rake, it is always smart to look back to where you have been raking once the cloudiness in the water clears. You may find that you have unearthed a clam that did not make it into your basket!

Steamers, or softshells, are much more elusive. Their long necks can extend allowing them to sit 6-12 inches below the surface of the sand. Because of the fragility of the steamer, raking will result in many crushed or pierced shells. My favorite method, taught to me by my mother, is to dig a hole about 1 foot deep. Then, starting with your hands turned outward, slowly dig in and along the wall of the hole grasping the clams as your fingers hit their shells. This method keeps them from retracting their necks and digging farther into the sand away from your reach. Again, for the faint of heart or the well-manicured, there are other ways! My brother swears by the toilet plunger method. Just place the plunger (a clean one please!) on the sand and plunge away! Stop every few strokes to see if you have pulled up a steamer. If you are using a shovel, dig the shovel in as far as you can, then leverage the handle down in one quick motion and spread the sand to one side. you will be able to pluck the steamers from the sand with ease.

By the way, a shellfish license is required! Visit the Town Hall in the town you are staying to apply.

As always, I just ask that you respect our fragile island aquaculture. Do not take more than legally allowed or more than you are able to eat within 24 hours. Place any clams that are below the legal size limit back in a safe place in the water to allow them to mature. Steamers should be placed neck up in the sand, one inch down. If you do not open or eat some clams, drive or walk to the nearest pond and free them!

Island Rumor the Obama's to visit. Fact or Fiction??

Rumors abound that President Barack Obama and his family may vacation this summer on Martha's Vineyard following in the footsteps of Bill and Hillary Clinton, who, it is also rumored, may be here at the same time. The White House wouldn't confirm the first family's vacation plans, but word is the Obama's have rented a house for two weeks at the end of August in the East Chop neighborhood of Oak Bluffs.
Located on the northern tip of Martha's Vineyard, Oak Bluffs, historically, has been something of an African-American enclave. Politician and pastor Adam Clayton Powell Jr., writer Dorothy West, and Massachusetts Senator Edward Brooke were all early homeowners. Celebrities such as Spike Lee and Charlayne Hunter-Gault make this Town one of their peaceful getaways. Does that mean that Oprah is not far behind?!
A presidential visit, especially one lasting two weeks, would indeed be a boon to the island economy because the President travels with a huge retinue of Secret Service, aides, and journalists. It would also add a wonderful and warm vibrancy to the end of the summer season.

Harbingers of Spring - the Osprey!

Here on Martha's Vineyard we all wait for signs of Spring...longer, warmer days and shorter, warmer nights, the Snowdrops poking their heads up, often through a new layer of snow (called "Farmer's Gold" as it is thought to be especially nourishing to fields waiting to have seeds sown in them), the reddening of the forests as buds on the trees begin to swell, the pairing up of ducks and geese in our ponds as they begin to search for the ideal nesting places, and the increasing hustle and bustle on our towns. But, probably one of the most heralded signs on the Vineyard is the news that the Osprey are back from their winter retreat in warmer climes. There was a new early record this year for the sighting of an osprey over the Island. It was reported in the Vineyard Gazette (http://www.mvgazette.com/article.php?20150) that Will and Sue Geresy of Chappaquiddick spotted a very high flying osprey over Poucha Pond on Chappaquiddick on March 1. The bird was heading north and the Geresys heard the bird call once as it flew by. Also reported, in the M.V. Times, was that Lynn Silva had spotted one on March 12th calling and soaring over the Martha's Vineyard Hospital (http://www.mvtimes.com/marthas-vineyard/calendar/2009/03/19/birds.php).
